Walnut Street Park has a user-activated splash pad, which means the water is not simply running all day: a child presses a control and it starts.

That detail is worth more than it appears. Children who are wary of water play often approach it very differently when the water is something they control rather than something that happens to them. A hesitant three-year-old who will not walk into a running spray will frequently press the button, step back, watch, and then walk in on their own terms a few minutes later.

It also means the park is quieter when nobody is using it, and that the water is not wasted on an empty afternoon.
